Aquaculture

The United States imports more than 80% of the seafood we eat. This seafood is often mislabeled and its quality is questionable. Global fish capture production has stabilized with aquaculture surpasssing fisheries, while the imports to the U.S. remain high. Aquatic animal production is expected to increase by 10 percent by 2032 and an estimated one-third of the world's assessed fish stocks are overexploited, according to the UN (FAO). The Blue Transformation Roadmap has been outlined by the FAO, to achieve sustainable growth, shared benefits & conservation across the international community. Not only does overfishing cause harm to the marine ecosystems, it also has a direct impact on those who rely on the sea to survive.

Fish and seafood products provide critical nutrients for more than three billion people - nearly 40% of the world's population - and supply an income for 10-12% of the world's population. Over the past 40 years, marine species have seen a decrease of 39%. While global fish and seafood production has quadrupled over the past 50 years, and the average person now eats almost twice as much seafood as half a century ago.
